Was it La Fonda, it is on the southeast side of the plaza? If you got a decent rate, it was probably because you were there off-season. I checked out all the hotels near the plaza. The closer you get to the plaza the higher the rates get. Really the El Rey is very clean, the rooms are pretty cool (each room is distinctive, with a Southwest flair), and the rates are not bad. The El Rey is only about a 6 minute drive from the plaza, so there is plenty of opportunity to shop.
