I think that the Party needs to clean house and get an agreed upon agenda that is reflective of a majority of the people, not a select few. The very vocal, but relatively small Christian Right has seriously hurt the Party by forcing the Party to adopt a platform that doesn't comply with the beliefs of most of the members of the Party.

The GOP is what the Dems were years ago. The Dems had a radical liberal minority that was very vocal and was able to impact the party. McGovern being nominated reflected that. Unless the GOP adopts a moderate platform, which emphasizes less Government, less bureaucracy, more education and concentrates less on issues such as pro life/pro choice and other moral but not Governmental issues it will continue to flounder. Hopefully this served as a wakeup call. I agree this mandate was not a show of support for Clinton, but dissatisfaction with the Republicans. In California, the campaigns I saw (particularly Boxer/Fong) were ones where the Dems concentrated on the issues and the Republicans concentrated on bashing Clinton. Fong lost because of this as did many others. I'm not gloating, since only one person I voted for won, but I'm not surprised at the results.

With respect to Major Shane, I don't have a lot of sympathy. He knew the rules going in and you've got to follow the rules. My company sells lots of products to the US military. If we misrepresent the product we go to jail. We follow the rules and live happily ever after. If we don't like the rules we get out of that type of business. We don't get a Government check. If the Major didn't like the rules he could have done the same. He could have stopped getting a Government check. The last I checked, service in the Military was voluntary. The fact that the standard is different doesn't matter.

In fact the standard should be different just by virtue of the fact that the job you guys do requires you to follow commands almost without question. As an officer I'm sure you would agree that you need your men to follow orders and not debate them before they choose to follow them. "Do I really want to bomb this target that I've been ordered to bomb?" Furthermore, I'm sure you wouldn't want your men to be voicing their opinion on every issue or taking shots at the Commander in Chief instead of doing their job.

Anyway, motorcycles are a better subject than politics or courts martial and the guy with the Valkyrie Tourer has a great ride for a great ride from GA to Vegas!
