If you honestly think that the Republicans are motivated by a search for the truth and the preservation of the Constitution rather than revenge for Watergate, Clarence Thomas, Bork, et al. and by the prodding of the small but vociferous conservative right then you are really halucinating.

I have heard the rhetoric and not once have I heard a valid argument to justify this impeachment. They talk about preserving the constitution and holding the President to a higher standard, but nobody addresses how this undermines the United States or how this might be construed that way. This is an embarrassing and pathetic attempt to do what the Constitution was not intended to do.

Query, if this guy was a Republican and did not support abortions, was pro-defense, etc. would these Republicans...or YOU, take the same stand? That is what you and everyone else supporting this impeachment has to ask themselves. I asked myself that question early on, not focusing on the man but the office and this simply doesn't warrant the punishment sought.

With respect to witnesses, many Republican Senators have also raised concerns about witnesses. There seems to be something distasteful about the possibility of Monica Lewinsky in the well of the Senate. But if I were a White House lawyer, I'd object and why not. Wouldn't any good lawyer try to limit the witnesses called against his client and maximize those he could call. That's not socialism, that is good lawyering.

As for the State of the Union speech...excellent presentation, ridiculous proposals. I wasa neither jeering nor cheering, but laughing.

As for the economy, Clinton has had little if anything to do with its strength other than keep Greenspan and select an excellent Treasury Secretary and stay out of the way and let it run. If it took Monica Lewinsky and others to occupy his time so he stayed out of the way, great. In that regard I'm glad he has little self control.

You might want to read "Better han Sex Confessions of a Political Junkie" by Hunter S. Thompson to get a flavor for this guy. He is no doubt a sleaze bag, but the office of the President should be preserved. You need to seperate the man from the charges and ask yourself if you want the President removed for this b.s. not Bill Clinton. I'm not even sure what Nixon did was impeachable, but this certainly is not.
