Gotta tell you some good (and true) stories about Mao. During the Cultural Revolution Mao was told that the birds were eating a great deal of the grain in China, thus creating hunger. Mao decided that all of the birds should be killed, which the people did. One billion plus people can kill alot of birds. Once the birds were gone the insects stepped in and decimated the crops. Shortly after that the politicos decided that grass, trees, dogs and cats were bourgeoise and the people got rid of the trees, grass, cats and dogs. Even today there are few trees, little grass, virtually no cats and dogs and you rarely hear the sound of birds.

The way they got 25,000,000 killed during the Cultural Revolution is that the party members would go to a village and gather a group of people together. They'd tell the group that they knew one of the group was anti-party and that they wanted to know if the group could identify the traitor. The group would talk amongst themselves and later identify the "traitor" to the politicos. The "traitor" would "disappear" and another meeting would be held. At that meeting the party heads would tell the group that they identified the right guy but that he talked and said there were two more "traitors" in the group. The group would then turn in two more guys who did nothing more than lose a vote for "traitor of the week".

The point is that the culture of the Cultural Revolution has not changed. Those that survived were loyal to the party and/or kept a low profile. For the most part they still believe in the good of the party.
